Sustainable Energy – What We Can Do

Using energy sustainably is something we all can do. There are many ways we can reduce our energy footprint. The best place to start is with energy efficiency and conservation. Turn off lights and appliances when we are not using them; install energy efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs; weatherize our homes; insulate our attics; choose Energy Star approved items when buying new appliances like TVs, refrigerators, washers and dryers; and drive a car that gets good gas mileage. If we still want to do more, we can consider installing a renewable energy system, such as solar electric, solar hot water or micro-hydroelectric. There are already many of these types of systems installed on the Yurok Reservation. While these systems can be expensive to install, they will pay for themselves over time. With proper care and maintenance these systems can provide reliable energy with low environmental impact for many years.
