United Indian Health Services (UIHS) enlisted SERC’s help with their ambitious plan to put a large solar electric system on the roof of the Potawot Health Village, UIHS’s headquarters in Arcata. UIHS provides comprehensive health care for Tribe members on California’s north coast. We helped UIHS to develop the project concept and secure funding for Phase 1 of the project from the State of California.

A local professional solar contractor installed the 40 kW photovoltaic (PV) Phase 1 system, but UIHS wanted to take extra steps to ensure their clients, employees, and the local community all got the clean energy message. UIHS hired SERC to perform quality assurance for the new system and provide a real-time solar output monitoring system. The monitoring equipment now in place allows UIHS maintenance staff to view present and cumulative power and energy production by the PV system.

More recently, Phase 2 of the project, funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, has expanded UIHS’s total rooftop solar capacity to 110 kW. See UIHS’s web page for more information about solar energy at the Potawot Health Village.
