SERC EDUCATIONAL EQUIPMENT

SERC’s education program includes fuel cell equipment and interpretation. We have designed and built a complete fuel cell power system for educational demonstrations and single-cell fuel cell kits for hands-on laboratories. We also design interpretive signs and brochures to educate the public about renewable energy in general and specifications for individual systems.

Stack-in-a-Box® $ 20,000
The Stack-in-a-Box® is a portable fuel cell system that can be used to educate people about hydrogen and fuel cells. It is designed to allow people of all ages and backgrounds to learn how fuel cells work. School-age students, as well as industry specialists quickly become comfortable operating the system, which has proven to be an effective educational tool. Information about the Stack-in-a-Box® is available on the SERC webpage at www.humboldt.edu/~serc/stackinabox.html.

Single-Cell Fuel Cell Kit
$ 295
With the SERC Single-Cell Fuel Cell Kit, students can explore the form and function of the various parts that make up a fuel cell. The 5” by 5” cell is easily assembled by handno special tools required. By supplying hydrogen and air this 58-cm2 fuel cell produces 2.5 W of electric power and can be used for laboratory exercises, including measuring voltage-current curves as shown in the figure below. Students can connect multiple kits to investigate series and parallel circuits and increase power output. The student fuel cell kit includes:

    • cathode endplate (labeled AIR)
    • anode endplate (labeled H2)
    • gaskets (2)
    • collector plates (2)
    • gas diffusion media (GDM) (2)
    • membrane electrode assembly (58 cm2)
    • 3/4” brass 1/4”-20 bolts (8)
    • 1” nylon 1/4”-20 compression bolts (8)
    • plastic 1/4” NPT barbed fittings (2)
    • Operation and Maintenance manual
