Richard Engel with SEAT participants

SERC engineer Richard Engel (kneeling) poses with another successful group of Student Energy Auditor Training participants.

Energy Efficiency and Conservation

SERC has provided energy efficiency workshops and training for several clients, including:

The Redwood Coast Energy Authority. As part of its larger joint effort with the RCEA (www.redwoodenergy.org) to improve energy efficiency at Humboldt County’s water and wastewater treatment plants, SERC developed and delivered a workshop on efficient operations and equipment for local water/wastewater plant operators.

The Alliance to Save Energy. SERC worked under contract to ASE (www.ase.org) to develop the Student Energy Auditor Training (SEAT) program, a hands-on curriculum for teaching students about energy by performing a real efficiency audit of their own school. SERC developed three-day and one-day versions of the course for high schools and a one-day middle school course. SERC staff traveled to several schools across northern California to pilot test the curriculum, finding many students responded enthusiastically to the SEAT program. The program is now in use in schools across the U.S.

The Yurok Tribe. SERC’s work with the Yurok Tribe included a week-long energy efficiency training. Tribe members completed several days of classroom training, including hands-on experiments with energy auditing tools. The trainees then visited Tribal homes to try out their new energy auditing skills. The course helped the Tribe to reach its objective of building human capacity in the energy field.

HSU's Extended Education is once again offering a one-day energy auditing training from February 5-7, 2009. Instruction and training sessions will be led by SERC Research Engineer Richard Engel and HSU Green Campus Program Coordinators. Additional auditing material will be presented by Dana Boudreau, Redwood Coast Energy Authority Program Manager. Click here to register or view the course flyer for more information.
